A Great Day

On the last day of September, which also would have been my father’s 85th birthday, I returned to my Alma mater, Gustavus Adolphus College to attend a Board meeting.  When I rolled into the room I felt a bit like Rip Van Winkle. I realized that it had been a year and a half since I had last sat around the Board table and things had changed! There were new faces and there seemed to be a new way of doing things.

As I sat in the room, I was overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude.  I went down memory lane and remembered that exactly one year ago to the day I was living in a transitional care unit, had a trachea, a catheter and was wearing a diaper. What a difference a year makes! The sense of gratitude grew as I gave God thanks for being with me on this spiritual adventure that I am on and for giving me the opportunity to return to a place and to people that I love.

As I sat there I also realized why I have loved being on the Board so much. The virtuous side of me likes it because the college transformed my life.  Being on the Board is small way of saying thank you and paying it forward.  The egotistical side of me (Yes, I have one but I am not proud of it) liked saying that I was on the Board of Trustees.  As I sat there, I was delighted to learn the real reason that I like being on the Board.  I like being around great people, celebrating victories, wrestling with challenges, and yes, even going over budgets.

Why do I write this? To let you know that I that I had a great and energizing day?  Yes! Most of all I write to remind you once again that God can use you just the way you are.  You were created by God’s hand, in God’s image for God’s purposes. Your life and your circumstances do not need to be perfect for you to do something great or small for God.  So this week do something great for God – for the love of God, you will be glad you did.

I hope you have a great day!
